For the longest time, my sister had been pulling her hair out trying to get her four year old son to recognize the beginning sounds of random things around the house. Although he could tell that a certain letter was in play, he was still not making the connection between the letter and the sound.
Reading the alphabet book was not cutting it since upper case letters had not been introduced (thank God) and things were getting confusing because many pictures did not depict the accurate beginning sounds (although there are a few close calls for the sake of vocabulary enhancement in this document too).
So she did what any amazing mom would do (I have to say she is amazing), and took matters into her own hands. She designed a bunch of flash cards to do just what she wanted.
Just download the printable which is a Microsoft Word file. The format is set to A4 sized papers. Extra pages are provided for you to do your own thing. The file is editable as well- and absolutely free for no other purpose than to put something out there to help other kids in the journey towards great reading experiences!
Steps:
- Print.
- Cut.
- Laminate.
- Enjoy.
Click on the image below for the document.
These would make for an excellent resource for your reading centers or library corners.
I know she’d love to get any feedback from all of you out there.
Have a good day.
I will be using these cards. Thanks a bunch

There’s some great sound/vocab cards on the document – but I will probably take a couple out, so as to not confuse my students (eg: ‘eight’ sounds like an ‘a’ and ‘earth’ has more of an /er/ sound). I find in my prep class (5/6 year olds) it can take quite a while for students to make the connection between the letter name and sound in an oral situation, then to also learn which letter makes the sound by identifying it in a printed/written form. There’s a lot for them to learn when connecting all of those things, and it takes some of my students the whole school year to connect it all. Thanks for sharing, always love extra resources!
